So, I was at the doctor last week.
Just the usual checkup that comes with being ancient.
He took some blood, counted my limbs, and made me stand on the dreaded scale.
Yeah, I have more work to do on that front; time to put more crawl and less cask into my cask crawls perhaps?
I also got a bonus flu-shot, yippee!
Will we still be getting those next year when the new Dept. of Bleach replaces the current Dept. of Health?
Bottom line, is that he wants me to cut back on my donuts, my bacon, and my beer; what kind of monster would do that to a bloke?
I haven’t been bingeing the donuts and bacon (mmm nice combination there) for quite a long time now, and despite the impressive beer consummation lists that accompany my weekly musings, I still consider myself a moderate drinker, doesn’t everyone?
On a typical week, I will visit Jones Wood Foundry just the once, and have three to four pints of relatively lower alcohol beer on that occasion, and then if there is a cask event or random cask available in walking range, I will also venture out on the weekend to partake; for a random cask, I will usually stop at three pints, and for a cask fest, it will be closer to four/five pints doled out in 4oz servings.
I still consider myself to be a moderate drinker.
My doctor would like me to be even more moderate.
So, now that we are in Dry January Damp November, I plan on halving my beer intake for a while … for the most part.
Yep, I know that there is a cask event coming up in a couple of weeks at The Brewers Collective (TBC), and I know that I already have my ticket purchased.
Yeah, and I also know that I have a nice bottle of farmhouse cider that I brought back from the Finger Lakes a couple of weeks ago.
And then there are the four gift beers that came all the way up from Austin TX last week.
So it will not be a perfect halving, and there will be exceptions going forward, but they can be dealt with:
- I will ask for half pours (2oz) at the cask fest.
- I will be bringing the cider along for sharing at Thanksgiving.
- I will be sharing the Texan beers with the good folks at JWF this week.
I am actually getting psyched up to do this thing.
The difficulty will be with the weekly jaunts to JWF.
I have no intention of skipping out on my night of social activity, or lack of activity (but always social) if you think about it.
Everybody needs a third place, somewhere that is not home and is not work; Jones Wood is my third place, where I go to socialize and to unwind.
I am just going to have to find an alternate beverage to go along with my two pints of beer each week, and I don’t think that water (as delicious as it is) is up to the job.
Maybe it is time to try out the non-alcoholic cocktails in JWF, except for those that may contain bacon or donut.
Or sarsaparilla, isn’t that what lily-livered tinhorns like myself are supposed to drink?
Now, where am I going to find that?
Apparently not anywhere close to NYC according to Google.
Root beer? Not the same thing.
Ooh I know, how about Kvass?
There has to be plenty of places out towards Sheepshead Bay that brew or import Kvass, preferably brew it.
I sense a Kvass crawl coming up.
Cask Kvass?
There is a thought; a difficult one to verbalize though.
Maybe, I will try my hand at brewing that myself.
But, back to the beer.
I was actually very good last week; hemmed in by my doctor’s appointment and a cultural event last Thursday evening, I was only in JWF long enough to swig a couple of pints of Old Glenham Spinners stout.
And that was it for the week; both weekend days were devoted to shopping and walking.
Central park is looking very nice this time of year.
Although I did sneak back to JWF this Monday for two pints, but that is this week not last week, so it doesn’t count, yet.
My doctor would be very happy …
… apart from the two pints …
… and the other two pints.
